Compatibility Levels for 2-150 kHz
For my master's thesis, I made contributions to the work done by one of my advisor's previous senior design groups. This work pertains to smart meters and the disturbances encountered using Power Line Communication (PLC). Utilities in Europe have cited issues with receiving metering data from consumers. The carrier frequency range allotted for sending/receiving this data, 2-150 kHz, currently has no standards for the level of allowable disturbances. Therefore, standards need to be set.
Setting standards requires setting levels of allowable disturbances. The first step means setting Compatibility Levels. Although this issue has primarily been encountered in Europe, the future use of PLC in North America means that considerations on an international level will be beneficial. My work pertains to the consideration of a current North American standard that can be considered.
