FEEDER Summer Institute

The Foundations for Engineering Education for Distributed Energy Resources (FEEDER) Consortium includes eight universities serving to further interest in power and energy research and education.

As a member of the Grid Engineering for Accelerated Renewable Energy Deployment (GEARED) Student Innovation Board, I have the opportunity to attend and promote programs such as the summer institutes hosted by universities in our consortium.

The Summer Power Experiences Program 2015 (at the University of Kentucky) and the 2016 Summer FEEDER Institute (at the National Renewable Energy Labs) were five day education programs where students traveled to sites and facilities for technical tours and presentations from industry engineers and operators. We visited facilities for wind, solar, hydro, coal, and pumped storage; a transmission control center; a smart grid demonstration site; a power distribution site; and toured lab facilities. These tours and presentations allowed me to see first hand some of parts and concepts I've learned about in class and provided me with a better understanding of my current and future role as a researcher, student, and teacher.
